REACH went dental in October. REACH (Research and Explore Awesome Careers in Healthcare), a hands-on health program for high school students hosted at Montana healthcare facilities, was created in 2007. This month Partnership Health Center, Western Montana AHEC and the Montana Office of Rural Health jointly hosted a pilot Dental REACH at which students had the opportunity to job shadow dentists and hygienists and learn about personal dental hygiene and dental career pathways.
For more information about REACH click on K-12, above, or contact Martha Robertson at 243-4746.
Welcome Master Social Worker, Diana Reetz-Stacey, and Psychologist, Kate Whipple-Kilmer, new specialists with the Rural Primary Care Behavioral Health Collaborative. Through a partnership with critical access hospitals and the UM, these pre-licensed professionals work full-time while receiving distance supervision from UM faculty. This HRSA funded program is just another way Western Montana AHEC succeeds in making quality healthcare more accessible to rural Montana.

Montana colleges have been awarded a $15 million grant to expand opportunities for Montanans to gain skills and credentials for high-paying jobs in the healthcare industry across the state. Through the “Montana HealthCARE” (Creating Access to Rural Education)Mont grant, which will be administered by Missoula College University of Montana, 15 Montana two-year, community colleges, and tribal colleges will partner with 39 healthcare providers—both public and private—to improve health care training opportunities in the state.
John Cech, with the Office of Commissioner of Higher Education wrote: "Montana’s success speaks very well to the quality of Montana’s proposal and the great team from the University of Montana, MT Dept of Labor and Industry, MSU’s Office of Rural Health, MHA…An Association of Healthcare Providers, and many industry representatives who worked on this great effort!"
Here, at AHEC, we note the dedication of Barry Kenfield, Director, and Kaye Norris, Asst. Director, who were in the office 24-7 during July.
