Sheridan County News – January 13, 2011

It was an unusual, maybe once in a lifetime day of classes for 40 high school students from northeast Montana. They spent six hours on January 10 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, dealing with a simulated major accident. The scenario extended from ambulance care through rehab.
The simulation featured a mannequin that filled the role of a 28 year old who fell asleep while driving. The result of that supposed nap was a one-vehicle rollover which cracked the driver's pelvis, caused back and neck injuries and head wounds— plus injuries to a leg.
According to Cass Staton, Outreach coordinator for the Eastern Montana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at Billings, "Eastern Montana has to produce its own health professionals. We have to grow our own in this area because of the harsh weather and rural conditions."
Each of the 40 students taking part in the Research and Explore Awesome Careers in Healthcare (REACH) program received a scrub top and a first-aid kit. In addition, drawings were held for 16 stethoscopes and seven blood pressure cups following the program. Assisting AHEC and Sheridan Memorial Hospital with the REACH day were these three donors:
    —Enbridge Pipeline ($500)
    —Nemont Telephone ($500)
—Sheridan County Health Office ($200 )
According to Nancy Lasar, who helps coordinate REACH locally, area high school students should be aware of their Summer 2011 opportunities to attend week-long MedStart Camps. Those camps will be held at:
    —MSU-Billings campus, June 19-24.
—University of Montana campus at Missoula, July 10-15.
    —MSU-Billings campus, July 17-23.
